Introduction
The term domain can refer to internet and how they are structured and organised for delivering and accessing services on the internet. The term "Domain" and "Domain name" are used interchangeably in context of internet. They are identified by unique IP addresses, which makes it possible for a device to connect to internet and communicate directly with the specified domain.
When it comes to hierarchy, Root domain servers as the parent node of internet domains. It contains multiple Top Level Domains (TLD). TLDs include .com, .org, .gov and several other domains, depending on the country and their country codes.
Eligibility to Register Domains in India
In order to be eligible to register domains, such as .ac.in, .edu.in and .gov.in, following organisations are to be made eligible:
- Centrally recognised or affiliated schools.
- Centrally recognised or affiliated colleges.
- UGC or Central or State Government approved universities.
- Websites related to government control and affiliated with them.
Registration of Domains in India
In order to register .ac.in, .edu.in and .gov.in domains, following process are to be noted:
- Identify a registrar: Identify a registrar and create an account with them. ERNET India is the registrar for India.
- Check Availability: Check if the desired domain is available.
- Submit Your Application: Once the desired domain is found, submit an application to register it. The application may require details such as name of the institution, accreditation and other details.
- Provide Documentation: Submission of documents to verify your institution and its authenticity will be required.
- Wait For Approval: The application will be scrutinised by relevant authorities and may take up to several days to get an approval.
- Registration Fee: Once the application is approved, payment of registration fees is required to complete the process.
